Women, violence and the bible

All my life I have been taught to respect all forms of religion and their teachings even if they seem strange to me. These different epics that we are reading in class are a little bit out of the ordinary, but they are still fun to read and think about. Still though there are many things that I dislike about the concept of these readings. The first of which is of how women are generally respected and thought of as. For example, the main role of the women in these epics is to provide for their husbands and succeed in providing male children. If for some reason they are unable to do so then they are thrown aside and considered as failures. The idea of women degradation comes mostly from the book of Genesis. Another concept that I felt strongly about was concerning the laws that govern whether or not you are faithful to god. According to the bible the people that live on this planet are free. I do not necessarily think we are free unto god. Freedom is a lack of restraint and in order to remain faithful to god one must force themselves to do many things that they wouldn’t necessarily do in order to remain faithful and refrain from any type of punishment. In Deuteronomy god told the Israelites to sack villages on the way to the promised land and once they would reach the promise land the Israelites would have to exterminate anyone that they saw living their. God is promoting violence and thus I don’t necessarily see him as the hero in any of the stories. In other words he goes against his own commandment of “thou shalt not kill” (Exodus 20:13). This idea of violence and treating women with discontent has also transgressed onto modern societies especially Muslim ones. Groups and people all over the world are killing other people in the name of god and most of the time they get away with it. Also if you look at the bible in a different perspective it also can be used as a propaganda tool and a method for fear. God himself is the enforcer and if you choose to disobey god then you will suffer the consequences by execution or another form of harsh punishment.
